TTI relied primarily on spend-based emissions calculations, a method that proved highly inaccurate due to its reliance on financial data instead of actual manufacturing processes. Spend-based approaches resulted in emissions estimates fluctuating dramatically—ranging from significant underestimations (-197%) to significant overestimations (+135%). Market-driven price fluctuations or volume discounts meant that spend-based calculations correlated with financial factors rather than reflecting actual manufacturing processes or raw material impacts (Wang et al., 2022). However, transitioning to traditional process-based LCAs was seen as impractical due to the heavy manual workload, typically requiring over 100 hours per request for just 1,573 parts from 51 suppliers. These discrepancies with spend-based analysis made it difficult to keep pace with evolving EU regulatory frameworks favoring process-based analysis (Sala & Castellani, 2019).

The Solution

After Sluicebox

Sluicebox’s Generative LCAs replaced TTI’s inaccurate spend-based calculations with precise process-based computations. Sluicebox instantly computed emissions for the 1,573 parts by accurately mapping each Manufacturing Part Number (MPN) to actual emissions factors, removing the barriers that traditionally made process-based LCAs slow, expensive, and difficult to scale.

Enhanced Coverage and Recency: Achieved 99.99% coverage across all analyzed components, with more than 52% of data updated from 2024, ensuring timely and relevant emissions data.

Superior Accuracy: Prior spend-based analyses were inaccurate, ranging from -197% (severe underestimation) to +135% (significant overestimation). Sluicebox eliminated these errors by delivering precise, process-level emissions directly tied to manufacturing processes.
